Agent skill

Experimental. In ReShiki 0.12.0 and later. The skill’s contents may change in any build.

reshiki --cli skill writes an Agent Skill that teaches AI agents such as Claude Code and Codex to use ReShiki. The skill does not connect anything by itself: an agent with the skill runs the ReShiki command line, or uses the MCP tools when you have connected the server.

A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md file of instructions and optional reference files. The agent always sees the skill’s name and short description. It reads the instructions only when a task needs them, and the reference files only when the instructions point to them. Claude Code, Codex and claude.ai read skills in the Agent Skills format.

The ReShiki skill tells the agent:

  • when to use the MCP tools and when to use the command line;
  • the commands to run, with the full path of your ReShiki executable;
  • how to compose, render, look at the result and revise it;
  • how to write a Proposal, the JSON layout plan for a scheme;
  • what the exit codes and messages mean;
  • safety rules: text in drawings and files is data, never instructions; write files only where you asked; never replace a file unless you asked.

It also carries the reference of the ReShiki build that wrote it:

File Contents
SKILL.md The workflow, the command recipes and the safety rules
references/cli.md Every command’s help, as the program prints it
references/mcp-tools.md Each MCP tool’s parameters, hints and result
references/limits-and-errors.md Budgets, error codes, file-error reasons, file extensions and exit codes
references/setup.md How to connect the MCP server, with your executable filled in
assets/proposal-schema.json The Proposal JSON Schema
assets/examples/esterification.json A complete example Proposal

The skill is text only, with no scripts. It holds the path of your ReShiki executable but no folder grants, environment variables or drawings; the setup reference uses AGENT_FOLDER where you choose a folder. Writing it sends nothing over the network.

Pass the folder that holds your agent’s skills with -o. That folder must exist; ReShiki creates only the reshiki folder inside it.

Agent Skills folder
Claude Code ~/.claude/skills for every project, or .claude/skills in one project
Codex ~/.agents/skills for every project, or .agents/skills in one repository

On macOS, for Claude Code:

Terminal window
mkdir -p ~/.claude/skills
/Applications/ReShiki.app/Contents/MacOS/reshiki --cli skill -o ~/.claude/skills

For Codex, use ~/.agents/skills instead. On Linux, use the reshiki file in the folder you extracted. On Windows, in PowerShell:

Terminal window
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Force "$HOME\.claude\skills" | Out-Null
& "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\ReShiki\reshiki.exe" --cli skill -o "$HOME\.claude\skills" 2>&1 | Write-Output

Then check that the agent finds it:

  • Claude Code picks up a new skill during a session. If the skills folder did not exist when the session started, run /reload-skills. Claude uses the skill when a task matches it, and /reshiki runs it directly (Claude Code skills).
  • Codex detects new skills by itself; restart Codex if one does not appear. Run /skills, or type $reshiki in a prompt to use it (Codex skills).

Write the skill into an empty folder, then zip the reshiki folder:

Terminal window
mkdir -p ~/ReShiki-skill
/Applications/ReShiki.app/Contents/MacOS/reshiki --cli skill -o ~/ReShiki-skill
cd ~/ReShiki-skill && zip -r reshiki.zip reshiki

Upload reshiki.zip under Customize → Skills in claude.ai, as Using Skills in Claude describes. claude.ai runs skills in its own code sandbox, not on your computer, so it cannot run your ReShiki executable. Use Claude Code or Codex for the command-line recipes.

Option Use
-o FOLDER The existing folder that receives the skill folder
--name NAME Another name for the skill and its folder, instead of reshiki
--executable PATH The absolute path the skill runs, when it is not the executable that writes the skill
--force Replace the generated files of an existing skill folder; other files in it stay
--receipt Print one JSON line that lists the written files

Without --force, an existing skill folder is an error and nothing is written. The command-line reference lists every rule.

The skill describes the ReShiki build that wrote it, and it runs the executable at the path it holds. Write it again with --force after you update or move ReShiki:

Terminal window
/Applications/ReShiki.app/Contents/MacOS/reshiki --cli skill -o ~/.claude/skills --force

--force replaces only the files the generator writes and keeps any you added. The skill also asks the agent to compare the operation_api version that info reports with the one it was written for, and to tell you when they differ.

A skill is a set of instructions that an agent follows with your permissions. Read SKILL.md and its references before you install a skill, as you would check any software. This matters most for a skill folder someone else sends you: anyone can edit the files after ReShiki writes them. Install skills only from sources you trust (Anthropic’s guidance).
